Best Parks for the Nature Loving Family in Cary, North Carolina
When my family and I moved to Cary, North Carolina from the mountains of Colorado, I quickly put my head down and did some research on the most enriching parks for my two toddler boys to explore and enjoy. I don’t know about you but we love running around, identifying trees, pretending goblins hide in tree trunks, and appreciating what each season brings. My oldest was born on a horse ranch so getting our hands dirty is actually something we seek out. Can you relate?

While we aren’t in the mountains here in the Triangle, there are so many options for families who love the outdoors like us. These are just too good to gate keep.
So, here is my list of some of our favorite spots for the nature loving family in Cary, North Carolina:
PRAIRIE RIDGE ECOSTATION
You might feel surprised as I was to drive through an industrial village and take a turn into the most magical place for kids to interact with the natural world around them. If your kid loves mud kitchens, digging, and building forts, this is the spot for you.
Why we love it:
Nestled within the woods this space feels like a safe place for kids to run and explore with natural boundaries to keep parents at ease
They have story times and nature craft days - find them listed on their website
In the summer, their water play station is a great cool down
No need to bring your own tools - sheet pans, bowls, spoons, shovels, you name it - they have it!
I love taking a stroll through the eco station path before we get to the playspace for my own deep breath and nature walk ;)
HEMLOCK BLUFFS NATURE PRESERVE
This spot is one of my favorites to go to often to observe and talk about the difference in beauty each season brings. With manageable hikes for littles, fun stairs and boardwalks, overlooks that make you feel like you are in the mountains - it’s a pretty incredible spot. Not only that but after your hike, the nature center provides educational and interactive opportunities for children to learn about the ecosystem of what they just saw.
Why we love it:
It is a great opportunity to build up endurance in “hiking”. The shortest loop is .8 miles and is attainable for 18+ months
The stairs and boardwalks are fun!
There is a small scale nature play space for kids 4 and under when you enter
They have a kinetic sand interactive activity in the Nature Center that is always a hit!
PRO TIP:
Ask the front desk to borrow a nature backpack before you start your hike to learn about a specific interest such as trees, insects, etc.
HISTORIC YATES MILL COUNTY PARK
We had a blast exploring this park in the fall. The walk to the Mill is a short one and you can continue of the nature trail if you’re feeling like it! Before heading out to hike - spend some time learning about the operable water powered gristmill. We made a little song about “the mill crushing the wheat!” and sang it all the way to the Mill - that was a lot of fun.
Why we love it:
The education center is interactive and full of hands-on learning activities
There is a nature scavenger hunt you can ask for at the front desk which is a fun nature walk motivator
It’s simply stunning! The Mill is amazing to see close up and the views around the lake make you feel immersed in nature
PRO TIP:
After your adventure, head across the street for some delicious ice cream at Howling Cow - NC State Creamery!
If you are a nature lover in the Cary, North Carolina, I’d love to hear your favorite spots!

After playing, laughing and enjoying just being together at a park in Cary, North Carolina - the thirty minutes flew by and was stress-free and fun.
And the best part? A Park Session like this is a great way to dip your toes in and see how easy and natural it can be to capture your family’s connection, all while keeping things fun and light.
But imagine this—what if we had just a little more time?
I know, I know - more time with my temperamental 2 year old and hungry 5 year old?! Trust me, your kids will last AND it will be full of joy.
A full session allows for even more of those beautiful, organic moments to unfold. The longer we’re together, the more relaxed everyone gets, and that’s when the magic really happens. We can slow down, explore, and capture even more of those in-between moments that make your family unique.
And I promise you, I am no stranger to breakdowns. I am intuitive by nature and more than able to lead your family through each moment (without pressure) towards images that make your heart feel something. More time together will only set us up for success.
So if you’re considering a longer session but aren’t sure how your little ones will handle it, think of this Park Session as a great way to test the waters. If you love it (and I think you will!), an Outdoor session will give us even more time to create even more beautiful memories.

Raleigh, North Carolina Extended Family Photographer
There is something special that happens in a growing family…there is a new energy, contagious joy, renewed bonds, and deep gratitude for every moment you have together.
It is just meaningful.
In my own experience of bringing our son, Shiloh, into this world, family time means so much more than it ever has. Even in the mess, everything fades to black as we team up to love and support one another in our new roles.
Capturing these special family gatherings is a gift that continues to give as years pass.
It’s an archive that takes you back to the special bonds that change and richen as you grow and age with one another.
During our extended family session together, you really get the best “bang for your buck” as I will pull different sets of the family aside to photograph. Not only will you get that big group photo of everyone you love in one photo but you will also get grandma loving on her grandson, a moment for you and your husband, mother and daughter squeezing each other tight, and much more. The best part? There are many hands to keep the kids occupied as we move through these various combinations.
It is a joy filled family activity that gives the gift of freezing time.

How to Prepare for your Lifestyle Newborn Session
Underneath all curated newborn photos are two parents meeting their sweet baby’s needs through sleepless nights to create a safe and caring home for a lifetime. This is what we aim to capture during our time together.
First off, I want to say congratulations. Whether this little life is your first or whether they already have siblings, your heart has made room to love more.
Underneath all curated newborn photos are two parents meeting their sweet baby’s needs through sleepless nights to create a safe and caring home for a lifetime. This is what we aim to capture during our time together.
Because a little guidance and expectation never hurts - I have answered a few major FAQ’s for you to prepare for our session…
Does my house need to be deep cleaned?
There are so many mixed feelings about inviting someone into your home postpartum. I’ve been there. You are adjusting to all things nursing, bottle feeding, sleep, and healing. This is not the time for a deep clean. So how should you prepare? That’s what closets are for! ;-) (only sort of kidding)
Don’t stress too much about a perfectly clean home. If your partner can do a little cleaning while throwing some clutter in closets - that’s just fine. Part of my creative work is making beauty out of any space without totally avoiding the fact that your home is lived in.
You can be rest assured that your photos will tastefully and artfully document this beautiful and messy season of life.
What should we wear?
Here are some basic guidelines:
Mom’s, let your outfit guide your families. Pick something you feel comfortable and beautiful in with a more neutral color palette. If you choose to go with a pattern, pull a color from the pattern to guide your partner and children’s outfits. (p.s. I love a pretty pattern!)
Inspiration: This patterned nursing friendly dress | These easy linen pants | This comfortable jumpsuit
Does everyone pass the movement test? Be sure you are able to move in what you are wearing. When you bend down or sit down, do you feel comfortable?
For the baby: I recommend having a swaddle or diaper cover, and one cute outfit. We will transition between these as we meet baby's needs in the hour.
Barefoot is best!
What will I need to do?
During our time together I will direct and prompt in a way that feels natural and authentic. More often than not, this dominos into a fun, laid-back, and engaging experience where your relationships and love shared with one another is put on display.
Your job is to love on that baby and one another!
I am intuitive and interpersonal by nature so I will move us through our session based off how everyone is feeling. This means diaper breaks, snack breaks, and nursing breaks are all allowed. In fact, I will be sure to document these as I am confident you will look back on the mundane moments with joy.

The Beauty Behind an At-Home Session
Sometimes, our homes reflect the state of our hearts. Seasons of mourning and seasons of dancing. In both, we hold space for family, for cuddles, for laughter, for encouraging words, and for tears. And you know what? Crayons on the table and sippy cups from 3 days ago sound to me like a home full of satisfied hearts. Messy, maybe. Joyful, yes.
It’s the most special thing getting invited to take photos of life in the home.
I know our homes are deeply personal.

Home is a place we hope our children will look back on as adults in fondness.
We tell our spouses of the spot on the couch we always chose to sit when reading a book or laying by that old fireplace during cold winter nights with a cup of hot chocolate. These photos matter. I am deeply honored to capture these at-home photos. It’s an invitation into your hearts. It is my greatest joy. The light may not be perfect and you might not have grand mountain backgrounds, but our eyes are drawn to connection.
That is where the beauty lies.

Family Photography: Redefined
Being a family photographer was intriguing to me, but I felt it needed to be redefined. Family photos needed to be something more - marked by laughter, curiosity, emotion, and relationship. More documenting and less posing.
I fell in love with photography on the streets of London. Sounds glamorous, maybe? But it wasn’t the glamor of London that drew me in. In fact, it wasn’t about London at all. I was a solo traveler captivated by families enjoying a scoop of ice cream, a little girl cuddled into her dad as he drank an espresso because it was probably her nap time, the awe of vacationers taking in Big Ben.
Being a family photographer was intriguing to me, but I felt it needed to be redefined. Family photos needed to be something more - marked by laughter, curiosity, emotion, and relationship. More documenting and less posing.
Let me share with you what this means for you:
Relaxed
Do you remember the hours before family photos and the frenzy that came with it? Making sure everyone looked perfect and was on their best behavior? Simply put, that is the last thing I want for you. I want your family to enjoy family photos and to feel like they can be themselves throughout the whole experience. I likely won’t ask for “cheeses” but you can be confident that there will be plenty of joyful smiles. And at the end of the day, the perfect shoes for your daughter will fade to the background as her giggles get louder.
Engaging
Throughout our session together, I will have fun prompts and games the whole family can play to capture interactive images. These spur on natural interaction and end up leading into more unprompted fun!
Emotive
I move around a lot during our session in order to get the intimate moments that captivate emotion - you may notice me running in close to take a photo of little hands wrapped around dad’s finger or a quick cuddle when your little one is feeling bashful. And don’t be surprised if I throw in a few questions that prompt sweet moments, too!
